See what people are saying about The Super Dentists

The Super Dentists, serving San Diego, surrounding areas and very soon in Oceanside, have been receiving some great patient reviews lately! Check out what our current patients are saying about our office:

Skylar has been excited for every appointment. She and I have enjoyed meeting the staff that we have met thus far. We will be getting into her treatment in depth soon and am confident that we will be just as pleased then too! Thank you for making her feel very comfortable and entertained too.

Sincerely,

Cheryl R.

The dental staff who put on my daughters expander was very friendly, and very gentle while performing their work. She answered all my questions and had a smile on her face the whole time.

Thank you,

Denissa T.

We as a family have always had negative impression and experiences with dentists. MY kids hated their dentists visits. I have finally found a very professional dentist facility that makes us feel welcomed and cared for. My kids can’t wait until their next visit.

Erick H.

Self-adjusting braces and super wires in San Diego

The Super Dentists is one of the first orthodontists to use these advanced braces, which have revolutionized tooth movement in recent years. With self-adjusting braces and our super wires, teeth move more quickly and efficiently. This means:
* Shorter treatment time without the discomfort often associated with frequent wire tightening required with traditional braces.
* Fewer appointments and shorter appointments can also be expected.
* Because there are no elastic ties to trap food and absorb moisture, they are easier to keep clean. Therefore, there is a reduction in "white spots" sometimes associated with traditional braces.
You can "Go Invisible" with 3 different types of braces that The Super Dentists offer in San Diego:

Nearly Invisible with In-Ovation braces
* Benefits:
-Shorter appointments
-Reduced treatment time
-Fewer adjustments and appointments
-Greater comfort
-Lower profile than other self-ligating braces
-No elastic or metal ties which means less plaque build-up and less difficulty keeping your teeth clean

Almost Invisible with Invisalign and Invisalign Teen
*Benefits:
-Clear removable trays
-You can continue to eat your favorite foods
-You can brush and floss normally to keep teeth and gums healthy

Completely Invisible with Incognito:
* Benefits:
-Completely aesthetic, no one will know that you are wearing braces
-Minimal discomfort and speech interference
-100% customized for the best results
-Customized wires that do not require adjustments often mean fewer appointments and less discomfort throughout treatment
-Nothing is placed on the front side of your teeth, so you don’t have to worry about visible decalcification marks

Orthognathic Surgery & Wisdom Teeth

Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. Orthognathic surgery corrects these problems and, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.

Using the latest in digital imaging technology, we demonstrate the overall functional and aesthetic benefits that you should know about orthognathic surgery such as Click here.

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) help is available in San Diego

The “Temporomandibular Joint,” more commonly referred to as the “jaw joint,” assists in the basic opening and closing movements of the jaw. Unfortunately, this joint is a common area for recurring pain. Although conventional wisdom suggests that “popping” sounds in the jaw indicates a TMJ dysfunction, this is not always true. Many times, your jaw is functioning properly even if a “popping” sound is present when chewing or talking.

The Super Dentists in San Diego offers a TMJ exam that evaluates the joint tissue in the “hinge” of the jaw. Possible problems include (click here to continue learning).

Post-Surgical Instructions and Post Anesthetic Patient Instructions

Post-Surgical Instructions

After your child has a tooth extracted, they may be biting on gauze. This is because we want him/her to keep pressure on the extraction site(s).

1. Activity: Control activity for at least two hours after extractions. Vigorous play may start bleeding.
2.
Diet: Encourage cool, clear liquids and soft foods for the first day. Your child may resume normal diet in 24 hours.

§  DO NOT drink from straws.

§  DO NOT vigorously rinse.

§  DO NOT eat hot soups or liquids.

§  DO NOT eat spicy foods.

Suggested diet: Milkshakes (no straws), diet yogurt, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, JELL-O, pasta, applesauce, etc.

3. Bleeding: It is normal for some oozing to take place. The saliva may be pink in color. If bleeding persists, apply pressure with gauze or a wet tea bag for 30 minutes.

If black pellets are in place where removed, these are to control bleeding and keep food from entering while the extraction site heals. They will shrink by themselves. It is okay if they fall out or are accidently swallowed.

4. Pain: Every patient responds to treatment differently. Usually Tylenol for children is sufficient to manage pain. One to two tablets every four hours for children under 60ibs. is recommended. Children over 60 lbs. may take adult Tylenol. NO ASPIRIN.
5.
Oral care: The teeth should be brushed normally except in the area of the extraction. On the day after the extraction, non-vigorous rinsing may be done three times a day with warm salt water (1 teaspoon per 8 ounces of warm water.)
6.
Notify our office if any of the following occurs:

§  Heavy bleeding after two hours.

§  Severe pain after 24 hours.

§  Elevation in temperature to over 101 orally.

Post Anesthetic Patient Instructions

Your child has received a local anesthetic. In addition to blocking sensation from the teeth, the anesthetic “numbs” the lips, checks and tongue in the area of treatment. This may be a puzzling or curious sensation for a youngster, but care must be taken that your child does NOT bite, or chew his lips or tongue, or laceration (rawness) of the tissues could occur. While this is not serious, (read more)

Dental Emergency Information

Emergency Information

Toothache

Clean the area around your sore tooth thoroughly. Rinse the mouth vigorously with warm salt water or use dental floss to displace any food trapped between teeth. DO NOT place Aspirin or heat on the gum or on the aching tooth. In the event of facial swelling, apply a cold compress or ice wrapped in a cloth. Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain and see a dentist as soon as possible.

Broken Braces and Wires

If a broken appliance can be removed easily, take it out. If it cannot, cover the sharp or protruding portion with wax, cotton balls, gauze or chewing gum. If a wire is stuck in the gums, cheek or tongue DO NOT remove it. Take your child to The Super Dentists and their team of professionals immediately. Loose or broken appliances that do not bother your child don’t usually require emergency attention.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek

Ice can be applied to any bruised areas. If there is bleeding, apply firm but gentle pressure with a clean gauze or cloth. If bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes or it cannot be controlled by simple pressure, take your child to a hospital emergency room.

Possible Broken Jaw

If a fractured jaw is suspected, try to keep the jaws from moving by using a towel, tie or handkerchief, and then take your child to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Bleeding After Baby Tooth Falls Out

Fold and pack a clean gauze or cloth over the bleeding area. Have your child bite on the gauze with pressure for 15 minutes. This may be repeated once. If bleeding persists, call The Super Dentists and their team of professionals.

Stainless Steel and Composite Crowns For Kids

Stainless Steel Crowns

General Information

If a cavity is not caught early, the decay can destroy so much of the tooth structure that there is not enough left to support a filling. A stainless steel crown will save the tooth and prevent the risk of pain and infection. This crown is a pre-made cap that has been trimmed and fitted to your child’s tooth. These crowns cover the entire portion of the tooth at the gum lines. Stainless steel is a long-lasting material in the mouth, and it will serve quite well for the life of the baby (deciduous) teeth. This will keep the tooth and root intact until normal tooth loss occurs.

Stainless steel crowns are used in several circumstances:

 Broken teeth that cannot be repaired by normal fillings.

 Badly decayed teeth where little tooth structure remains.

 To prevent breakage of a tooth which has had a pulpotomy (partial removal of the nerve).

We usually can place the stainless steel crown in one appointment. We will shape your child’s tooth to the necessary form and then trim a stainless steel crown to fit tightly on the tooth. This crown will then be cemented into place. The crowned tooth will usually fall out normally when the permanent tooth is ready to come in.

Instructions for Home Care

 There are no restrictions on your daily activities.

 Encourage brushing right away. A clean mouth heals faster.

 The diet should avoid between-meal sweets to help prevent cavities.

 Hard, sticky food should be avoided.

Notify us if any of the following occur:

 Gums around the crown becomes swollen or tender.

 The tooth that has the crown becomes painful or loose.

For more information on Composite Crowns click here.

Rapid palatal expander (RPE) video and instructions

A palatal expander, also known as a rapid palatal expander (RPE), rapid maxillary expansion appliance, palate expander or orthodontic expander, is used to widen the upper jaw so that the bottom and upper teeth will fit together better.

To see what it looks like and a video on how to use an (RPE) click here:
http://thesuperdentists.com/Treatment/ExpanderVideo/tabid/250/Default.aspx

To turn expander:

■Find a place in the house that is comfortable, where your son/daughter can lie on their back with their head tilted backward. (Looking up toward the ceiling).

■Sitting along side of them, have them open their mouths.

■Insert the key into the hole in the expander.

■Then turn the key toward the back of their throat.

■To complete the turn remove the key STRAIGHT down. Make sure that this is straight down because you do not want to reverse the turn.

HINT: Be sure to turn the key all the way toward the back of the throat. That way, you will be able to properly fit the key in the next hole.

Why Invisalign Teen in San Diego? More questions and answers about these clear braces just for you.

Consisting of a set of clear aligners, Invisalign braces are pretty much invisible to the naked eye – hence the name! Not only that, but because they are removable, it means that if you really need to, you can take them out – like when you want to eat popcorn or brush and floss your teeth properly .

Invisalign Teen invisible braces are one of the most modern and hygienic way of straightening your teeth, without the discomfort and irritation of the alternative metal braces.

They work by fitting over your teeth and gradually moving them towards your desired position. About every two weeks you get a new pair, and provided you wear them for the recommended 20 – 22 hours a day, you can choose to remove them for eating and drinking normally.

The greatest thing about Invisalign has got to be the fact that you can wear them to school and college or when you’re out with your friends and, unless you tell them, they probably won’t even notice they’re there!

Dr. Kami Hoss, based in San Diego County at The Super Dentists {TEL: 619/DENTIST (336-8478)}offers the Invisalign treatment for both teens and adults. In fact Dr. Hoss of The Super Dentists, has been awarded as the Premier Provider of 2010 by Align Technologies Inc. the makers of Invisalign clear braces. With hundreds of Invisalign cases and smiles enhanced, Dr. Hoss was awarded this status for having achieved an extraordinary level of Invisalign case experience and competence, thereby placing The Super Dentists in the top 5% of all Invisalign providers year to date!

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The Cost of Invisalign Teen is often comparable to that of braces and is typically covered by insurance to the same extent that other orthodontic appliances are. In addition, The Super Dentists offer a variety of flexible payment options to fit any family’s budget.

HOW MUCH TIME WILL MY CHILD SPEND AT THE ORTHODONTISTS’S OFFICE?
Invisalign Teen requires very little manipulation or maintenance by the doctor in order to be effective, so your child will spend limited time visiting the office. Better yet, no “emergency” visits for broken or loose brackets and wires.

WILL IT BE EASY FOR MY CHILD TO KEEP HIS TEETH CLEAN WITH INVISTALIGN TEEN?
Yes! Invisalign Teen allows your child to remove the aligners for eating and brushing, so it is easier to maintain proper oral hygiene with our product than its with traditional metal braces. Your teen can brush and floss normally, which can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

WHAT ARE SOME OTHER ADVANTAGES OF INVISALIGN TEEN TREATMENT OVER TRADITIONAL BRCES?
Wearing aligners makes an active lifestyle simpler. Since the device is removable, it’s easy for your child to play sports or an instrument, as any teenager would – even one who is not in orthodontic treatment. Also, because the aligners are made of smooth plastic, there are no metal wires or brackets to irritate cheeks or gums.

The Super Dentists awarded Invisalign Premier Provider status for 2010

Invisalign Premier Provider
As a 2010 Premier Provider, Dr. Kami Hoss has joined a very select group of orthodontists that has the honor of being placed in the top 5% of all Invisalign Providers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

San Diego, California – Dr. Kami Hoss of The Super Dentists, has been awarded as the Premier Provider of 2010 by Align Technologies Inc. the makers of Invisalign clear braces. With hundreds of Invisalign cases and smiles enhanced, Dr. Hoss was awarded this status for having achieved an extraordinary level of Invisalign case experience and competence, thereby placing The Super Dentists in the top 5% of all Invisalign providers year to date!

Dr. Hoss (“Dr. HaveOneSuperSmile”) received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and in 1993 was awarded his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from UCLA as well. He completed his post-doctoral residency training at the University of Southern California (USC) where he received a dual degree in Advanced Orthodontics and Cranio-facial Biology.

Being one of the first pediatric dentist and orthodontic practices in Chula Vista to introduce Invisalign to his practice back in 2000, he is proud to announce that he has been certified for over 10 yrs. and at this time he is the only Premier Provider in South Bay.

“It’s a real honor to have achieved Premier status with Align. I’m a huge proponent of this product and have offered Invisalign to many of my patients over the years – from very simple to complex cases, “says Dr. Kami Hoss. “It has allowed me to give my patients the smile of their dreams.”

About Align Technology, Inc.
Align Technology designs, manufactures and markets Invisalign, a proprietary method for treating malocclusion, or the misalignment of teeth. Invisalign corrects malocclusion using a series of clear, nearly invisible removable appliances that gently move teeth to a desire final position. Because it does not rely on the use of metal or ceramic brackets and wires, Invisalign significantly reduces the aesthetic and other limitations associated with braces. Invisalign is appropriate for treating adults and teens. Align Technology was founded in March 1997 and received FDA clearance to market Invisalign in 1998. Today, the Invisalign product family includes Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, Invisalign Assist, Invisalign Express, and Vivera Retainers. To learn more about Invisalign please visit www.Invisalign.com

Why Invisalign Teen? Questions and answers for parents.

Invisalign Teen ® treatment gives your teenager a great smile without metal braces – to help them feel confident in their smiles and themselves.
The Invisalign Teen system is a series of customized, virtually invisible aligners. The aligners gradually move teeth to help your teen achieve a great smile and proper bite.
On average treatment takes about a year. Because the aligners are removable, your teen can easily brush and floss for proper hygiene.

By giving teens a better smile without metal braces, the Invisalign Teen system helps them have the confidence to be at their best.
QUESTIONS:

IS INVISALIGN TEEN TREATMENT AS EFFECTIVE AS TRADITIONAL BRACES?
In the hands of a skilled practitioner and when worn according to your orthodontist’s recommendation, Invisalign Teen can be as effective as traditional braces for many types of treatment.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ADULT INVISALIGN APPLIANCE AND THE INVISALIGN TEEN APPLICANCE?
Although many of the benefits are the same, Invisalign Teen is differentiated by several new clinical features, such as compliance indicators and free replacement aligners.

HOW WILL I KNOW HOW OFTEN MY CHILD IS WEARING HIS/HER ALIGNERS?
The compliance indicators located on the upper aligner can estimate the approximate amount of time your teen spends wearing his/her aligners. The indicators are designed to fade from blue to clear as a gauge of approximate wear time, so you can monitor your child’s compliance easily.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD LOSES ONE OR BOTH OF HIS/HER ALIGNERS?
Should this occur, simply inform your orthodontist right away. The orthodontist may tell your child to start wearing his/her previous set, or the next set of aligners immediately. The orthodontist will then order your teen a new set of aligners to replace the ones that were lost. Invisalign Teen treatment includes up to six individual replacement aligners at no charge.

Having problems speaking after getting braces? Try reading this...

Having problems speaking after getting braces on? Try this....The Rainbow Passage is one of the most common standard reading passages to test an individual's ability to produce connected speech and correct any speech impediments.

The Rainbow Passage
When the sunlight strikes raindrops in the air, they act as a prism and form a rainbow. The rainbow is a division of white light into many beautiful colors. These take the shape of a long round arch, with its path high above, and its two ends apparently beyond the horizon.
There is, according to legend, a boiling pot of gold at one end. People look, but no one ever finds it. When a man looks for something beyond his reach, his friends say he is looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Throughout the centuries people have explained the rainbow in various ways. Some have accepted it as a miracle without physical explanation. To the Hebrews it was a token that there would be no more universal floods. The Greeks used to imagine that it was a sign from the gods to foretell war or heavy rain. The Norsemen considered the rainbow as a bridge over which the gods passed from earth to their home in the sky.

Others have tried to explain the phenomenon physically. Aristotle thought that the rainbow was caused by reflection of the sun's rays by the rain. Since then physicists have found that it is not reflection, but refraction by the raindrops which causes the rainbows.
Many complicated ideas about the rainbow have been formed. The difference in the rainbow depends considerably upon the size of the drops; the width of the colored band increases as the size of the drops increases. The actual primary rainbow observed is said to be the effect of a super-imposition of a number of bows. If the red of the second bow falls upon the green of the first, the result is to give a bow with an abnormally wide yellow band, since red and green light when mixed form yellow. This is a very common type of bow, one showing mainly red and yellow, with little or no green or blue.

Advice from a pediatric dentist in San Diego about brushing and flossing

Brushing

To promote good dental health habits in your children, teach them – early on – what constitutes optimal oral hygiene. Here are 6 easy guidelines for brushing their teeth:

1. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and a small strip of fluoride toothpaste. As soon as the bristles start to wear down or fray, replace your toothbrush with a new one.

2. Move the brush in a small circular motions to reach food particles that may be under your gum line.

3. Hole the toothbrush at an angle and brush slowly and carefully, covering all areas between your teeth and the surface of each tooth.

4. It should take several minutes to thoroughly brush your teeth. Brush up on the lower teeth, down on the upper teeth, and don’t forget the outside, inside, and chewing surface of all of your front and back teeth.

5. Brush your tongue and the roof of your moth before you rinse.

6. Do not swallow any toothpaste and rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after you finish brushing.

Your children (and you) should brush their teeth four times a day to avoid the accumulation of food particles and plaque:

* In the morning after breakfast

* After lunch or right after school

* After dinner

* At bedtime

Flossing

You know that there are areas between your teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach. That is  why it is important to use dental floss – it removes food particles and plaque that you toothbrush can’t. A thin thread of waxed nylon that is used to reach below the gum line and clean between teeth, dental floss should be used every day.

Here are 5 points for teaching your children how to floss:

1. Pull a small length of floss from the dispenser.

2. Wrap the ends of the floss tightly around your middle fingers.

Guide the floss between all teeth to the gum line, pulling out any food particles or plaque.

Unwrap clean floss from around your fingers as you go, so that you have used the floss from beginning to end when you finish.

5. Floss behind all of your back teeth.

Don’t forget! Floss at night to make sure your teeth are squeaky clean before you go to bed.

When your children first begin flossing, explain to them that their gums may bleed a little.

April is Autism Awareness Month

With it being Autism Awareness Month, I wanted to let our friends know that we do cater to children with special needs at both of our offices in San Diego County ( www.TheSuperDentists.com ). We have several patients that have informed us about the difficulty in finding a place to take their children to and how pleased they are with the additional special training each of one of our staff members has achieved to make sure that all children have a "super" time at the dentist. Please help spread the word about Autism and what we can all do as a community to help educate everyone about Autism. For more information on The Super Dentists click here and for Autism please click here.
